This case study examines the feasibility of developing problem-based assessment in the workplace for Hospitality Management Foundation Arts Degree (FdA) students. The primary aim of this initiative was to enhance graduate employability by offering a broader and more realistic framework for the assessment of skills, knowledge and analytical ability. One of the central questions underpinning this research focused on identifying what types of employer involvement are appropriate and most effective in the development of work based assessment programmes. Given the vocational nature of foundation degrees it is generally expected that employers will be involved with both their planning and validation. The authors felt that developing closer relationships with employers by having them more closely involved in the design and assessment of student learning (i.e. their assignments) would be beneficial in enhancing student employability.
